HISTORY

Pont-l'Evêque has a rich historical past. From the Roman period, the roads connecting Bayeux to Rouen and Lisieux to the littoral, crossed the Touques River close to the confluences of Calonne and Yvie, where the passage to ford proved to be possible. When the bridges improved the circulation, the merchants established and houses were built around. A commercial center initially, Pont-l'Evêque became after that the administrative seat of the Viscount of Auge. A city without a wall and practically without garrison it easily atracts the English army in 1346. The second English occupation of 1417 will be established until 1449. Then in 1590, the army of Henry the IV seizes the city; the district of Vaucelles and part of the church Saint Michel burns in the fire. After that a period of calm and prosperity will succeed to the violence and the destruction

On August the 24th, 1944, after a three day long combat, the Allies released the city from the German occupation. Pont-l'Evêque was destroyed by 65%. Who would have hoped, looking at these ruins ,that, twenty years later, all would be rebuilt, repaired, embellished and that Pont-l'Evêque would offer to the visitors such architectural treasures ?
