Port en Bessin
The commune of Port-en-Bessin-Huppain is a traditional fishing community which lives according to the rhythm of the tides and the daily sorties of its fishing fleet. Since the summer of 1999, Port-en-Bessin-Huppain, the largest fishing port in the Calvados and the third most important in Normandy, has established a range of guided tours which focus on its local heritage. Themes include the unloading of the daily catch at the fish auction, local flora and fauna, the cliffs, everyday life of a fishing port, and semaphore communication; guided tours take place throughout the year from specific meeting points. Early-risers might choose to follow the wholesale fish merchants in the auction hall - the Wall Street of the fishing industry - at 6am, while night owls will prefer to watch the boats unload their catch at around 11pm.
